Former SKorean PM Han Duck-soo announces run for president

Seoul, May 2 (UNI) Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced on Friday that he would run for president in June and pledged to introduce amendments to the country’s constitution to reduce the presidential term.
On Thursday, Han announced his resignation as the country’s acting president in order to be able to run in the presidential election, which is scheduled for June 3. Han is considered as the most promising candidate among those who could potentially compete against the Democratic Party's Lee Jae-myung.
"I decided to find something I can do for the future of the Republic of Korea I love and for all of us. I will do my utmost to be chosen by our people through the upcoming presidential election," Han was quoted by the Yonhap news agency as saying at a press conference at the National Assembly.
At present, the constitution of South Korea limits the president to one five-year term, but under Han’s proposal that term would be reduced to three years.
Han said he would prepare an amendment proposal during his first year in power that would be finalized in the second year, and then after the general and presidential elections in the third year, under the amended constitution, he would immediately step down.
He said the key goal to amend the constitution will be "for the president and the National Assembly to share power amid checks and balances," eliminating the legalization of politics and the politicization of the judicial system, promoting national interests and public welfare.
Han also promised to resolve current trade issues caused in particular by Washington’s new tariff policy.
On April 4, South Korea’s Constitutional Court voted unanimously to impeach former President Yoon Suk-yeol over his controversial martial law declaration, effectively removing him from office. He was indicated for abuse of power on Thursday.
