Four Arunachal NPP MLAs switch allegiance to PPA

Itanagar, June 16 (UNI) In a significant political development, four legislators from the National People's Party (NPP) have switched allegiance to the regional outfit People's Party of Arunachal (PPA).
This announcement was made through an official communique issued by the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte on Monday.
The MLAs who have joined the PPA are Namgey Tsering from Tawang constituency, Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East), and Oni Panyang from Mariyang-Geku.
Their shift marks a strategic realignment in the state’s political landscape, strengthening the
presence of the PPA, Arunachal’s lone regional party.
Further details on the reasons behind the change of party affiliation by the members are awaited.
In the 60-member Assembly, the NPP had secured five seats (the second highest after the ruling BJP's 46) in the 2024 polls, while the PPA registered victory in two seats. The Congress won just
one seat against NCP's three. The Assembly also has three independents.

Boatman drowns in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 16 (UNI) In a tragic incident, a 42-year-old boatman drowned at the Umngot river on the edge of the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya today after falling from the boat.The deceased, identified as Amilson Surong, fell from the boat while ferrying tourists on the Umngot River in Dawki under the West Jaintia Hills district.Village Defence Party (VDP) Dawki President, Kelvinel Khonglah said Surong was out on a routine boat ride with three female tourists when he suddenly experienced a seizure, lost control and fell into the river.The boatman's body was retrieved from the murky water after several hours of search and rescue operation launched by the police, fire & emergency services and local villagers.
