Go Ahead Eagles win first-ever Dutch Cup in dramatic penalty shootout

The Hague, Apr 22 (UNI) Go Ahead Eagles captured the Dutch KNVB Cup for the first time in the club's history on Monday, beating AZ 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in a thrilling final in Rotterdam.

AZ striker Troy Parrott had the game's first chance when he curled in the direction of the far corner, but Go Ahead goalkeeper Jari De Busser saved with help from the post. It was one of many saves from the Belgian, who would be named man of the match.

In the 54th minute, AZ was awarded a penalty after Joris Kramer brought down Ernest Poku in the box. De Busser saved Parrott's initial effort, but the penalty was retaken because Mathis Suray had encroached into the area. Parrott then converted at the second attempt to put AZ in front.

AZ was in control for much of the remaining regular time and might have doubled the lead, but De Busser was equal to Mexx Meerdink's effort.

Deep into injury time, Go Ahead was awarded a penalty after AZ midfielder Peer Koopmeiners handled in the area, and Mats Deijl held his nerve to net the equalizer.

There were no goals in extra time, meaning the game would be decided on penalties. While Go Ahead scored all four of their spot-kicks, De Busser saved from AZ's Zico Buurmeester and Maykel Lahdo, allowing Julius Dirksen to score the decisive penalty and seal the win for Go Ahead.

With the victory, Go Ahead Eagles captured the first major trophy in the club's history. For four-time Dutch Cup winners AZ, it was a third consecutive final loss, after defeats in 2017 and 2018.
