Gold at stake as India, Pak brace for a battle on tricky track

Nisshin (Japan), Oct 2 (UNI) India have Pakistan standing between them and Asian Games cricket gold on Saturday. Ordinarily, that sentence would be enough to sell newspapers, trigger television debates and keep social media busy till dawn.
But there is another rival waiting in the middle—the pitch.
After watching India’s semifinal against Sri Lanka, one could be forgiven for wondering whether the match was being played on a cricket ground or on a piece of farmland after the monsoon. The surface was cracked, turning and offering enough assistance to make even part-time spinners look like mystery bowlers.
That is why Pakistan, despite arriving without several of its biggest names, cannot simply be dismissed as cannon fodder.
India have the stronger-looking batting line-up and a considerably deeper squad. Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 80 and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's aggressive 38 in the semifinal showed that India's young batting corps is capable of adjusting to difficult conditions rather than merely swinging at everything that moves.
Pakistan, meanwhile, have enough spin to make life uncomfortable. Sufiyan Muqeem, Saim Ayub and their other slower-bowling options could find the conditions to their liking if the surface behaves as it did in the semifinal.
The danger for India is simple: cricket has an irritating habit of refusing to respect reputations.
A team may arrive with a galaxy of stars, a mountain of confidence and half a dozen experts predicting a procession to the gold medal. Then a ball grips, turns sharply, takes the edge and suddenly everyone remembers that it is still cricket.
India will also have Jasprit Bumrah, which is usually an encouraging thought for any captain. His new-ball burst against Sri Lanka showed why he remains India's most potent fast-bowling weapon. Axar Patel, too, has been among India's most consistent performers in these Games, using the turning surface intelligently.
Pakistan, for its part, will have the consolation that nobody has to remind its players what an India-Pakistan contest means. The rivalry needs no public relations department.
Yet India would do well to forget the rivalry once the first ball is bowled.
The assignment is not to settle the history of the subcontinent, win an argument on television or prove a point to social media. It is to win an Asian Games gold medal.
And that requires something rather less glamorous than chest-thumping—batting sensibly, bowling accurately and remembering that on a pitch behaving like a badly paved village road, the ball does not always obey the batsman.
India may have the bigger names and the deeper resources.
But on Saturday, the pitch gets a vote too.
