Haryana minister Vij burns Kharge's effigy over Modi's father remark, warns Congress against politics of anarchy

Ambala, Oct 26 (UNI) Haryana Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij on Monday burnt an effigy of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Ambala Cantonment, accusing him of insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late father and warning that attempts to create anarchy under the guise of regime change would not be tolerated.
Leading a protest against Kharge's remarks on Sunday at a political gathering in Patna, Vij launched a blistering attack on the Congress leadership, accusing the opposition party of abandoning political decorum and resorting to personal attacks after repeated electoral setbacks.
The controversy erupted after Kharge, responding to an interruption during his address in Patna, made a remark involving Modi's father. The BJP condemned the comment as offensive and disrespectful, triggering protests against the Congress president.
"The country will never tolerate such an insult to the Prime Minister," Vij said, accusing the Congress of repeatedly dragging Modi's family background and parents into political disputes.
Addressing BJP workers and supporters after burning Kharge's effigy, Vij said political opposition was a fundamental democratic right but personal insults and attacks on family members had no place in public discourse.
During the protest, BJP supporters raised slogans against Kharge and the Congress. Vij said burning the effigy was intended to register strong opposition to the Congress president's remarks.
"By all means, engage in politics, but also respect the culture of this country," he said, urging opposition leaders to maintain dignity while criticising government policies.
Vij also questioned the Congress's political rhetoric ahead of the opposition INDIA bloc's proposed November 1 rally in Delhi, warning that any attempt to turn demands for a change of government into disorder or violence would be unacceptable.
He expressed apprehension about possible law-and-order problems if large crowds assembled in the national capital, citing episodes of political unrest in other countries. However, he offered no specific evidence that there was a pre-meditated plan to foment violence through the proposed rally.
The opposition has announced the November 1 mobilisation at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan to protest alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and demand greater accountability from the Election Commission.
Vij said parties seeking a change in government should place their policies before voters, expose shortcomings in the administration and seek a democratic mandate rather than encouraging confrontation.
"India is a democracy where different political parties are entitled to hold differing opinions," he said, adding that criticism of government policies was legitimate but should remain within democratic and ethical boundaries.
Taking aim at the Congress over its repeated references to Modi's humble origins, Vij questioned why the Prime Minister's past as a tea seller should be used as a political insult.
He said millions of Indians earned their livelihood through small businesses, street vending, transport services and factory work, and argued that their occupations should never become grounds for ridicule.
Vij said the strength of Indian democracy lay in its ability to allow people from ordinary backgrounds to reach the country's highest constitutional offices.
He also accused the Congress of losing public support and becoming increasingly frustrated by its inability to return to power at the Centre.
Escalating his criticism, Vij questioned the Congress's historical association with British colonial rule and accused the party of failing to respect India's cultural traditions.
He said political disagreements should be fought through elections and public debate rather than personal attacks, while warning Congress leaders to exercise restraint in their language and conduct.
The minister also invoked the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, referring to the controversial statement attributed to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi following Indira Gandhi's assassination. He sought to link his concerns about political unrest to what he described as the Congress' historical record.
During the protest, BJP supporters raised slogans against Kharge and the Congress. Vij said burning the effigy was intended to register strong opposition to the Congress president's remarks. UNI KK NST CDS
