Haryana to map all govt healthcare facilities on unified GIS platform

Panchkula, Nov 1 (UNI) Haryana is rolling out a statewide Geographic Information System (GIS) project to put every government healthcare institution on a single digital map, allowing citizens to locate hospitals, primary health centres, sub-health centres and AYUSH facilities instantly while giving the administration a unified view of infrastructure gaps across urban and rural areas.
The initiative, which integrates records from the Health, AYUSH and Medical Education and Research (MER) departments, will replace fragmented departmental databases with a common geospatial platform accessible through a digital interface. Users will be able to retrieve the geographical location, basic institutional details and photographs of individual facilities, bringing the state’s entire public healthcare network into one coordinated information system.
Additional Chief Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Sumita Misra, reviewed the project at a meeting on Saturday, where GIS mapping data of healthcare facilities across Haryana was presented. She directed officials to consolidate all Health Department information on a single platform and make it publicly available wherever feasible, stressing that transparency and accessibility must go hand-in-hand with administrative efficiency.
For citizens, the platform is expected to simplify the search for nearby government health institutions and the services they offer. For policymakers, the unified map will provide a comprehensive geographical overview of the state’s healthcare footprint, helping identify underserved areas, target infrastructure investments, and monitor existing facilities more effectively.
A key feature of the project is the involvement of the Haryana Space Applications Centre (HARSAC), the state’s nodal agency for remote sensing and geospatial technology. HARSAC representatives assured the department that they would extend technical support for managing the GIS database and facilitate inter-departmental data sharing within the state government.
This cross-departmental flow of mapped information is intended to support evidence-based planning, better coordination among agencies delivering different forms of healthcare, and sharper administrative monitoring.
Officials said the exercise marks a strategic shift from using geospatial tools merely for locating facilities to deploying them as active instruments for healthcare planning and resource allocation. By covering institutions spread across cities, towns and villages under one digital umbrella, the government intends to close information gaps and strengthen the delivery of public health services through data-driven governance.
