Himachal: BJP’s Baldev Tomar questions ‘Unfair Treatment’ of Kabaddi Captain Ritu Negi

Nahan, Oct 6 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson and former Shillai MLA Baldev Tomar, while welcoming Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's announcement of Rs. 1 crore each to the Himachali players of the Indian women's Kabaddi team who won gold medals at the 20th Asian Games, today questioned the government why Ritu Negi, a daughter of Shillai and captain of the Indian women's Kabaddi team, is being treated unfairly.
Tomar said that Ritu Negi has also brought glory to the country and Himachal at the international level. She is a daughter of Shillai and is among those daughters of Himachal who have made the country proud through their hard work and talent.
At a time when the government is announcing an honorarium of Rs 1 crore each for Himachali players in Kabaddi for their achievements, excluding Ritu Negi from this honour raises questions about the government's intentions.
He said that marrying a player in Haryana does not erase their Himachali identity and their contribution to the state. When it comes to winning medals for the country and bringing glory to Himachal, Ritu Negi is the daughter of Shillai and Himachal. The government should clarify why she was overlooked in awards and honours.
Tomar said that there should be no political discrimination in honouring athletes. The government should explain the basis on which Ritu Negi's achievements were excluded. If other gold medal-winning Himachali players are receiving honorariums of Rs 1 crore each, the reason for ignoring Ritu Negi's contribution should also be made public.
He demanded that the CM clarify the situation regarding Ritu Negi's case and announce that she would also be given appropriate honour and prize money. Himachal's daughters have brought honour to the country with their talent, and it is the government's responsibility to ensure that there is no discrimination in their honour.
Tomar said that honou ring athletes should not be limited to prize money; their struggles, achievements, and contributions to the state should also be equally recognized. Viewing Ritu Negi's contribution to the country through a political lens would be unfair to Himachal's sports talent.
