Honeymoon murder case: Sonam undergoes mental assessment

Shillong, June 16 (UNI) Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, was taken to the Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (MIMHANS) here on Monday by the police for “mental assessment”.

“It was a “psychiatric routine examination” and was referred to by the Medical Officer of Ganesh Das hospital,” Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, told UNI.

Syiem said that doctors at the MINHANS hospital found Sonam’s mental health is “sound”.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Meghalaya Police which is probing Raja Raghuvanshi murder case will take Sonam and her aides to Wei Sawdong parking lot on Tuesday for reconstruction of the crime scene.

Last week, the SIT together with their counterpart in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh arrested Sonam and four others – Raj Singh Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi.

Kushwaha, an alleged lover of Sonam, had plotted the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi much before Sonam and Raja marriage on May 11.

The decomposed body of Raja was found from a gorge below the Wei Sawdong parking lot on June 2, eight days after the couple was reported they went missing during their honeymoon to Sohra, a popular tourist destination in Meghalaya.

Following the recovery of Raja’s body, Meghalaya Police formed an SIT and changed its course of investigation and arrested all five accused in the murder case.

Meghalaya Police, which codenamed the investigation as ‘Operation Honeymoon’, had collected evidence from the residences and other places frequented by the murder accused in Indore and Ghazipur.

The SIT have seized a machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered near Raja’s dead body.

The other items recovered at the crime scene include a white shirt, a strip of Pentra 40 tablets, part of an LCD screen from a mobile phone, and a smartwatch worn by the deceased.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya police are also likely to seek further remand of the accused persons, who were sent to police custody for eight days on June 11 by a local court in Shillong for interrogation. UNI RRK SSP
