HP: Understanding occupied territories essential for complete national consciousness: CU Vice-Chancellor

Ashok Raina
Dharamshala, Oct 27 (UNI) A comprehensive understanding of India's national consciousness requires awareness of its occupied territories, Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Central University Prof Sat Prakash Bansal said on Tuesday.
Addressing the inaugural session of ‘Jammu and Kashmir Accession Week 2026’, organised by the Centre for Kashmir Studies, Prof Bansal said an incomplete understanding of India's geography leads to an incomplete understanding of its national consciousness.
He emphasised that firmness and dialogue were not contradictory qualities and that sustained dialogue should continue even while remaining firm in one's convictions.
A balance between the two was essential for advancing individual and national interests, he said.
Highlighting the growing importance of documentation, Prof Bansal urged researchers and research centres to focus more on preserving and documenting information.
Speaking as an expert, India Foundation Director Capt Alok Bansal expressed concern over what he described as rapid demographic changes in the occupied territories, with a large number of people from outside these areas settling there.
He also alleged that Pakistan was extensively exploiting the natural resources of these territories for its own interests, while the local population was not benefiting from their exploitation.
Capt Bansal underlined the cultural and religious significance of these areas, stating that several religious sites central to the sentiments of the Indian people remained neglected there.
In his welcome address, Director of the Centre for Kashmir Studies Prof Malkit Singh said Jammu and Kashmir Accession Week had emerged as a major platform for academic discourse over the past six years.
The week-long lecture series provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions on contemporary issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir, he added.
Dean Academic Affairs Prof Pradeep Kumar, Dean of the School of Social Sciences Prof Kanwar Chanddeep Singh, faculty members, research scholars and students attended the programme.
Experts from different parts of the country also participated.
