IIT Hyderabad celebrates election of distinguished professors as Fellows of the Royal Society

Hyderabad, May 21 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is celebrating a landmark moment as two of its Distinguished Professors — Prof Chennupati Jagadish of the Australian National University and Dr Mallikarjun Tatipamula, CTO at Ericsson — have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society (FRS), one of the most prestigious scientific honours in the world.
The Fellowship of the Royal Society, the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence, is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science, engineering, and medicine. This honour places Prof Jagadish and Dr Tatipamula among globally renowned scientists such as Newton, Einstein, and India’s own Sir C V Raman.
Both scientists have deep academic roots in India and maintain close associations with IITH, embodying the country's growing influence in global scientific and technological innovation.
Prof Chennupati Jagadish, an acclaimed expert in semiconductor nanotechnology and photonics, is the first Indian to receive Australia’s highest civilian honour — the Companion of the Order of Australia. He also serves as the first Indian and non-European Australian President of the Australian Academy of Science. In 2025, he was elected both to the Royal Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr Mallikarjun Tatipamula, a trailblazer in the global telecom industry, has played a pivotal role in the evolution of 5G and future-ready networks. As CTO at Ericsson (Silicon Valley), he is leading the development of AI-native 6G networks. His academic journey spans NIT Warangal, IIT Madras, and the University of Tokyo.
Expressing pride in the achievement, Prof B S Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, stated: “This is a proud and historic moment for IITH. The election of Prof Jagadish and Dr Tatipamula to the Royal Society is a testament to their lifelong commitment to scientific excellence. Their global impact and strong ties to IITH will continue to inspire future generations of researchers and innovators.”

The institute hailed this recognition as a major milestone that highlights India’s growing contribution to the global scientific community, an official statement said on Wednesday.
