Imposition of Emergency a Black Day in democracy : TN Guv

Chennai, June 25 (UNI) The imposition of Emergency this day in 1975 was a Black Day

in democracy, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi said today.

In a X post,he said today is the 50th anniversary of imposition of Emergency on Bharat.

On this Black Day in 1975 Democracy in Bharat was killed, Constitution of Bharat was

trampled, Fundamental rights of citizens were suspended, the Judiciary was made

subservient to the Executive, Press was completely gagged, millions of nationalists

were imprisoned and academic institutions were shut, Mr Ravi said.

"Armed security forces occupied campuses. As a University student, I suffered rifle blows

for not vacating my hostel room", he recalled.

"We must not forget those traumatic days when an insecure Prime Minister with contempt

threw the Constitution and Constitutional safeguards to the wind and tried to seal the fate

of the entire nation and democracy for power", he said.

"My humble and heartfelt homage to the millions of our brave countrymen and women who

risking their lives and of their families fiercely resisted the brutal dictatorship and made it

unendurable", the Governor said.

"Thanks to their sacrifices that the dictatorship could not be enduring and democracy returned",

Mr Ravi said.

He said "Let each one of us take the pledge to defend the Constitution of Bharat at any cost and

ensure that no one even dares to disrespect it and the great nation does not ever suffer such a

Black Day again."
