Incessant rain hampers rescue operations; 17 dead in monsoon-related incidents in Himachal

Shimla, June 29 (UNI) Incessant rains over the last 24 hours has triggered landslides, flash floods, and road mishaps across Himachal Pradesh, severely affecting life and hampering ongoing rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Kullu and Kangra districts.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority, rescue efforts are underway in Kullu where flash floods struck following a cloudburst on June 26. However, fresh spells of rains have hindered the operations. Monsoon rains have so far claimed 17 lives this season—nine in rain-triggered mishaps and another eight in road accidents linked to slippery conditions and poor visibility.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for light to moderate rainfall at most places, with intense spells likely in districts like Bilaspur, Solan, Sirmaur, Shimla, Mandi, and Hamirpur. A flash flood risk alert remains in place for multiple districts including Chamba, Kangra, Una, and Kullu, where low-lying areas are vulnerable to inundation due to saturated soil.

In Shimla city, continuous rain coupled with thunderstorms and low visibility conditions has prompted authorities to advise caution. The IMD has also warned of possible vehicle skidding and damage to weak structures. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors and shift livestock to safer areas. Water supply in Shimla town has also been affected.

Sahil Sharma, Public Relations Officer of Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Ltd. (SJPNL), said turbidity in raw water at Nauti Khad in Gumma was recorded at 1850 NTU at 7:50 am.

“Due to high turbidity and floods at all treatment plants, water quality is affected. Residents are advised to use water judiciously,” he said. Despite the challenges, 42 MLD of water was supplied

to the town on Saturday.

The IMD has advised residents to follow traffic alerts, avoid water bodies, and monitor updates as

the rainfall is expected to persist in the coming hours.
