India can dominate world cricket in two years: Muzumdar

Mumbai, Oct 31 (UNI) Building a team capable of adapting to the demands of modern-day cricket, rather than relying solely on established names, is central to India's ambition of becoming a dominant force in women's white-ball cricket, head coach Amol Muzumdar said on Saturday.

The steady emergence of young cricketers from the age-group system has given the national team plenty of reasons for optimism, with Muzumdar believing the next generation could accelerate India's progress, particularly in the shortest format.
India’s maiden ODI World Cup triumph last November marked a significant milestone, but the team is yet to win a major T20I tournament. With the inaugural six-team ICC T20I Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Mumbai and Vadodara, Muzumdar and new captain Smriti Mandhana will have an opportunity to address that gap.
Muzumdar, however, has a bigger vision, hoping India will establish themselves among the most formidable sides in international cricket over the next couple of years.
“Two years down the line, if they start dominating world cricket... dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” Muzumdar said during an event organised by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai.
The coach believes the foundations for that ambition are already being laid at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), where young players undergo structured training across different age groups. “We're already on that path. Some amazing talents are coming through," Muzumdar said.
“The talent that I've seen at the (BCCI) CoE, where they happen to have the U-15, U-19, and India A camps. The work that happens at the Centre of Excellence is superb. The camps are a good reflection of where Indian women's cricket is at the moment.
“There are some terrific players coming through. You'll be surprised how soon they catch up. We took a long time to adjust to certain demands. But they are tuned in. They are professionals,” he added.
According to Muzumdar, younger players have a better understanding of the physical and technical requirements of modern cricket, allowing them to adapt much faster.
“Even U-15 players, the athletes are professionals. They understand the nutrition part of the game, the fitness part, and they're terrific fielders. They're good athletes. They understand that athleticism is key in cricket. You'll soon find the younger generation, when they take over, (that) India is in a good state.”
The former Mumbai batter also traced his coaching philosophy to lessons learnt from renowned coach Ramakant Achrekar, who mentored the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli. Winning, discipline and intensity in training, he said, remain the three non-negotiable elements of his approach.
“We play to win. There is no second thought in that and that came from where I grew up. There is no substitute. In my mind, I was really clear that winning is everything,” he said.
“And how do we go about it? That is another question. One more non-negotiable was...the discipline factor in the team, and it still remains the same. In the dressing room, there is a cricket ethic that everyone tries to follow. We try to inculcate certain things in the training sessions.
“Another non-negotiable was the intensity at which we practise, and that again stems from where
I grew up. The intensity of which we train. Then we can inculcate that into the game situation,” he added.
