India end Korea’s seven-title reign, clinch historic women’s recurve gold

Aichi-Nagoya, Oct 2 (UNI) India pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Asian Games archery, ending South Korea’s seven-title winning streak as Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and 17-year-old Kumkum Anil Mohod defeated the reigning champions 5-3 to win the women’s recurve team gold here on Friday.
The victory was India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team event and came in the country’s first final in the discipline at the Games. South Korea had won every women’s recurve team title since 1998.
The Indian trio showed remarkable composure in windy conditions, holding their nerve through a final that remained finely balanced until the last arrow.
The first two sets ended level, with both teams shooting 54 in the opening set and 56 in the second, leaving the contest tied at 2-2.
India then produced the crucial surge in the third set. While the Koreans struggled with their final arrows, India closed strongly with an 8-9-10 sequence to post 55 against South Korea’s 51 and move 4-2 ahead.
The fourth set produced a dramatic finish. South Korea scored 54, while India also reached 54. Kirti’s opening arrow was initially judged an 8 but, after closer examination, was upgraded to a 9. The tied set gave India the crucial point required to seal the gold.
The Indian archers had earlier stormed into the final with a 5-1 victory over China, reaching the women’s recurve team title clash for the first time at the Asian Games.
The triumph also ended South Korea’s extraordinary run in the event. The Koreans had won every women’s recurve team gold since 1998 and were chasing an eighth consecutive title.
The victory was particularly significant for 17-year-old Kumkum, who maintained her composure in the pressure-packed final alongside the more experienced Bhakat and Kirti.
For India, the gold marks a major breakthrough in women’s recurve archery and adds another landmark to the country’s impressive medal campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
