India storm to mixed 4x400m relay silver after Vithya’s stunning finish

Aichi-Nagoya, Sep 24 (UNI) India produced a dramatic late surge to win silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Asian Games here on Thursday, with anchor runner Vithya Ramaraj delivering a superb finishing burst to secure the podium place.
The Indian quartet of Manu TS, Poovamma MR, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramaraj clocked 3:14.46 to finish second in a closely fought final.
Bahrain took the gold in an Asian Games record time of 3:12.87, while South Korea claimed bronze in 3:14.54.
India’s medal appeared under threat midway through the race, but Vishal TK produced an important leg to keep the team firmly in contention.
The race then came alive on the final leg when Vithya Ramaraj launched a powerful acceleration. She chased down the runners ahead and surged through the closing stretch to bring India across the line in second.
Her finish ensured India held off South Korea by just 0.08 seconds in a thrilling battle for silver.
The Indian team had entered the final after finishing second in Heat 2 in 3:16.23. The quartet of Kiran Pahal, Jay Kumar, Poovamma Machettira and Manu TS had initially competed in qualification, with the final lineup subsequently featuring Vishal TK and Vithya Ramaraj.
The silver adds to India’s athletics medal haul at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and comes on a day when Seema Kumari also won bronze in the women’s 10,000m.
For India, the mixed 4x400m relay medal was particularly significant for the manner in which it was secured, with the team recovering from a challenging position and Vithya producing the decisive acceleration when it mattered most.
Bahrain’s record-setting performance ultimately denied India the gold, but the Indian quartet’s 3:14.46 secured a hard-earned silver in one of the day’s most exciting athletics finishes.
