Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron departs Colombo after strengthening of maritime ties with Sri Lanka

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS), comprising INS Tir, INS Sujata and Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sarathi, departed Colombo, Sri Lanka, after concluding a successful port call aimed at strengthening bilateral defence cooperation and maritime partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
The visit featured a series of professional engagements, naval interactions and community outreach activities, reaffirming the longstanding maritime relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
During the port call, the Senior Officer of 1TS, accompanied by the Commanding Officers of the three ships, called on the Commander, Western Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). The interaction provided an opportunity to reaffirm the close ties between the two navies and their shared commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation.
As part of professional engagements, sea trainees of the Indian squadron visited the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) at Trincomalee, where they interacted with their Sri Lankan counterparts and exchanged professional experiences.
In a reciprocal engagement, Sri Lankan Navy cadets from the academy visited the Indian ships and familiarised themselves with the training facilities and activities of the squadron.
The interactions helped foster professional camaraderie and strengthen bonds between the young trainees of the two maritime forces.
The Indian Navy personnel also participated in a beach-cleaning activity as part of their community outreach initiatives, highlighting their commitment to environmental sustainability and marine conservation.
The ships were opened to visitors, including members of the local community and the Indian diaspora, offering them an opportunity to interact with the crew and gain insights into the Indian Navy's training and operational activities.
On departure from Colombo, the three ships conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Sri Lankan Navy ship SLNS Nandimithra. The exercise involved coordinated maritime manoeuvres and was aimed at enhancing operational coordination and interoperability between the two navies.
The visit further reinforced the enduring maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka, with both sides emphasising cooperation in regional maritime security, capacity building and maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
