Irani Cup: Dogra, Muzaffar lead J&K’s fightback against Rest of India

New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Reigning Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir showed plenty of resilience on the second day of the Irani Cup in Srinagar, recovering from two precarious positions to take a 41-run first-innings lead over Rest of India.
After slipping to 37/4 in the morning and then 166/8 after lunch, the reigning Ranji Trophy champions were rescued by veteran Paras Dogra’s 75 and an attacking 64 off 58 balls from No. 10 Lone Nasir Muzaffar, who helped them reach 278.
Rest of India had been bowled out for 237 on the opening day, and J&K’s hopes of building a lead suffered an early blow when Mukesh Choudhary dismissed overnight batters Shubham Khajuria and Qamran Iqbal inside the first five overs.
Dogra and Abdul Samad then steadied the innings with a 97-run stand, taking J&K to 134/4 at lunch. Samad, who made 57, was the more aggressive of the pair and completed his 12th first-class fifty shortly before the break.
ROI struck back after lunch, however, removing Samad before Kanhaiya Wadhawan, Abid Mushtaq and Sahil Lotra fell in a 11-over spell. At 166/8, J&K were still 71 runs behind.
Dogra and Muzaffar then turned the innings around, adding 64 for the ninth wicket. Dogra fell for 75, giving Choudhary his fifth wicket, but Muzaffar continued to attack, adding 48 with Sunil Kumar for the final wicket to put J&K ahead.
Muzaffar was eventually dismissed for 64 as J&K were bowled out for 278. Choudhary finished with 5/78, while Akash Deep took 3/43.
In reply, ROI reached 24/1 at stumps, still 17 runs behind. Sudip Gharami and Sanat Sangwan were unbeaten, while 15 overs were lost because of slow over-rates.
Brief scores: Rest of India 237 & 24/1 (Sunil Kumar 1/9) trail Jammu and Kashmir 278 (Paras Dogra 75, Lone Nasir Muzaffar 64, Abdul Samad 57; Mukesh Choudhary 5/78, Akash Deep 3/43) by 17 runs.
