Jharkhand: IIT (ISM), ASAR hold dialogue on clean air, sustainable mining

Dhanbad, Oct 23 (UNI) IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and ASAR Social Impact Advisors jointly organised a dialogue on air pollution, public health and sustainable mining on Friday, bringing together government officials, researchers, mining sector representatives, civil society organisations and local communities.
The ‘Clean Air Dialogue 2026: Clean Air, Healthy Communities and Sustainable Mining’ was organised by the institute’s Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Centre and ASAR on the campus.
A report titled ‘Towards Sustainable Mining and Healthier Lives in Dhanbad’ was released, documenting residents’ experiences, air pollution concerns, associated health impacts and development priorities in mining-affected areas.
Addressing the gathering, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan stressed scientific reclamation of abandoned mines, practical research and employment opportunities beyond coal mining.
He suggested exploring geothermal energy using water from abandoned underground mines and converting deep open-cast mines into artificial lakes or other productive spaces, subject to technical feasibility.
Ranjan also called for effective utilisation of District Mineral Foundation Trust funds, dust control at overburden dumps and exploration of plastic waste in road construction.
He emphasised community participation and improved healthcare, education and infrastructure, alongside measures to address air and water pollution and land subsidence.
ASAR director Munna Kumar Jha said the report highlighted the experiences and priorities of mining-affected communities.
IIT (ISM) associate professor Suresh Pandian stressed coordination among researchers, government agencies and industry to translate scientific research into effective pollution-control measures.
