Justice Manch backs CBI probe in Vimal Negi case, questions Shimla SP’s role

Shimla, June 3 (UNI) The Vimal Negi Janjati Nyay Manch raised serious concerns over the role of Shimla Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi in the investigation into the suspicious death of HPPCL Chief Engineer Vimal Negi.
The Manch alleged that the SP's actions lacked transparency and demanded full cooperation from the state government in the ongoing CBI investigation.
Addressing a press conference in Shimla, Vimal Negi’s maternal uncle, Rajendra Negi, said, “The people of the state had demanded a CBI probe, and the government finally agreed. Then why is the district police chief still interfering in the matter? On whose directions is SP Sanjeev Gandhi moving the High Court even after the case was handed over to the CBI?”
The Manch accused the Shimla Police of failing to take decisive action despite the registration of an FIR.
Rajendra Negi claimed that SP Gandhi seemed intent on diverting the investigation from the beginning.
“Even when the public was demanding a CBI inquiry, the SP’s report appeared to suppress the truth,” he said.
He further questioned why the government remained silent while the district police chief continued to show “unusual curiosity” in the matter.
The Nyay Manch reiterated its faith in the CBI and appealed to the state government to refrain from creating hurdles in the probe.
“Only the CBI can conduct an impartial inquiry. The public’s trust lies with the CBI now. The government must ensure full cooperation,” said Rajendra Negi.
The death of Vimal Negi under mysterious circumstances has sparked widespread public concern and led to mounting pressure for a fair investigation. With the CBI now handling the case, all eyes are on the agency’s next move and the state government’s stance.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Shimla, Sanjeev Gandhi, currently on medical leave, filed a Leave Petition (LP) in his personal capacity before the Himachal Pradesh High Court, challenging the single bench order that transferred the investigation of Vimal Negi’s mysterious death to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In the LP, Gandhi has sought a court-monitored probe into the Vimal Negi case, raising doubts over the impartiality of the CBI.
As the matter heads for its next hearing on June 5, before the division bench of Himachal Pradesh High Court over the handling of the Vimal Negi death, the case continues to deepen the political and institutional divide in the state.
Vimal Negi, chief Engineer of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, went missing on March 10 from his office and his dead body was recovered from Bhakhra Dam in Bilaspur on March 18. His wife accused senior officers of HPPCL of involvement in the death of her husband and has sought criminal cases against them.
The death triggered a political storm in Himachal Pradesh, with the opposition BJP alleging a cover-up.
