New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) Marking an emotional farewell to an illustrious judicial career, Justice Abhay S Oka was accorded a warm and respectful send-off by the Supreme Court Bar on his last working day, even as Chief Justice of India BR Gavai announced that both he and Justice Oka have decided not to accept any post-retirement positions.
Justice Oka’s final day was marked by extraordinary dedication, as he returned to work just a day after the passing of his mother to pronounce ten judgments from the Bench. This act of duty drew admiration from the legal fraternity and symbolized the tireless commitment with which he served the judiciary.
In a ceremonial bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, emotional tributes poured in from judges, senior advocates, and law officers.
Describing Justice Oka as an “outstanding judge” and an “extraordinary colleague,” CJI Gavai highlighted his unwavering fidelity to constitutional values. “Even when his father passed away, he took only a day off,” the CJI recalled, lauding Justice Oka’s unparalleled sense of responsibility.
In a striking revelation, CJI Gavai shared that both he and Justice Oka have made a conscious decision not to accept any government or tribunal posts post-retirement.
“We both have decided we will not be taking up any post-retirement jobs,” the CJI said, reflecting a principled stand on judicial independence and post-retirement integrity.
Delivering his farewell speech, Justice Oka emphasised the fundamental qualities of the judiciary: “A judge should be firm and strict, and should never try to become popular. A judge should not hesitate to offend anyone when required.” His remarks underscored the essence of judicial impartiality and courage.
Attorney General for India R. Venkataramani praised Justice Oka’s unwavering commitment to upholding liberty and freedom of expression, calling him a judge “with a strong spine.”
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta echoed these sentiments, saying, “You always put duty first. Though your lordships may not believe in God, I do and I pray God always be by your side.”
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal remarked, “You protected liberty like no one else could,” noting that certain judges leave behind a vacuum that can never be filled.
Senior Advocate Dr A.M. Singhvi applauded the transparency and fluidity in Justice Oka’s courtroom, while ASG S.V. Raju remarked that even when his arguments were rejected, he felt the judgments were truly for justice.
Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan likened Justice Oka to a sturdy oak tree, firm and unyielding in the face of adversity.
Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy expressed gratitude for Justice Oka’s orders aimed at improving Delhi’s environment, while a host of other senior advocates, including Meenakshi Arora, Shadan Farasat, Madhavi Divan, CU Singh, Sidharth Luthra, and Mukul Rohatgi also paid glowing tributes.
