Thiruvananthapuram, June 14 (UNI) Director of Kerala Medical Education (DME) Dr K.V. Viswanathan has said the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) is providing legal counsel for all legal assistance related to confirming brain death.
The government has appointed a legal advisor to provide legal guidance related to K-SOTTO's activities as a regulatory body for human organ transplantation in Kerala, the DME said while inaugurating a one-day special training programme for government doctors on certifying brain death.
The primary objective of the programme was to provide expert training to doctors on the precise procedures, technicalities, and legal framework for determining brain death.
Specialist doctors from the General Medicine, Anaesthesia, General Surgery, and Pulmonology departments of various government hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram district, as well as doctors from Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, participated in the training organised by the K-SOTTO.
K-SOTTO Executive Director Dr S.S. Noble Gracious and Administrative Officer Binoy Mathew also addressed the gathering on Friday.
Prominent doctors conducted sessions on various topics during the training programme. Dr P. Chithra, Professor and Head of the Neurology Department at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, spoke on 'Brain Stem Reflexes'.
Dr Anil Satyadas, Professor and Head of the Critical Care Department, explained the prerequisites for brain-stem death testing and apnoea testing.
Dr Biju Bhadran, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, discussed the practical aspects of brain death, and Dhanya Raveendran, Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine, elaborated on the legal aspects of brain stem death certification and documentation.
K-SOTTO aims to enable more organ donations in the state and save many lives through this training programme by enhancing scientific knowledge about brain death and clarity in its determination.
