Karnataka rolls out comprehensive drought preparedness plan

Bengaluru, July 23 (UNI) Karnataka has launched a comprehensive drought preparedness strategy in anticipation of the impact of El Niño, the global climate phenomenon that is expected to trigger higher temperatures, weaken the southwest monsoon and increase the risk of drought across the state.
El Niño refers to the periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon disrupts global weather patterns and is often associated with deficient monsoon rainfall in India. Experts have warned that the current El Niño could be among the strongest witnessed in over 150 years.
Citing forecasts by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), the state government said El Niño conditions are likely to persist until May 2027, raising the possibility of prolonged heat, reduced rainfall, depletion of reservoirs and groundwater, drinking water shortages, lower agricultural output and rising food prices.
