Kerala to set up special committee on Labour Codes; report in 10 days

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 22 (UNI) The Kerala government will constitute a special committee with trade union representatives to examine the implications of implementing the Labour Codes and recommend measures to protect workers' interests. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 days of its formation.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan at the Secretariat here on Thursday, attended by Labour Minister Bindu Krishna and representatives of 22 trade unions.
The committee will recommend practical measures for framing state rules under the Labour Codes. The Labour Department Secretary will be its convenor, while the Additional Secretary of the Law Department, seven representatives of trade unions and officials of the Labour Department will be members.
Satheesan said the government would take a final decision on implementing the Labour Codes only after examining the legal aspects and hearing the views of all stakeholders. The state would take steps within the legal framework to minimise their impact and safeguard workers' rights and interests, he said.
The Chief Minister also expressed the hope that Kerala's labour rules would serve as a model for the country.
The meeting decided to take up with the Central government concerns over the threshold prescribed for bringing workers under the purview of the Labour Codes and urge it to lower the threshold.
The trade unions will be given an opportunity to propose necessary amendments to the draft rules prepared in 2021. The recommendations drawn up by the special committee will be circulated among all trade unions for their views.
Trade unions not represented on the committee will also be allowed to attend its meetings in person and submit their suggestions.
All unions participating in the meeting shared the view that workers' interests must be protected. The final state rules under the Labour Codes will be prepared and published after considering the committee's report and the recommendations submitted by trade unions.
