Kumkum turns shoot-off nerve into historic Asian Games recurve gold

Aichi-Nagoya, Oct 3 (UNI) Kumkum Mohod held her nerve when an Asian Games gold came down to a single arrow, firing a perfect 10 in the shoot-off to defeat South Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 and become the first Indian to win an individual recurve gold at the continental Games here on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Indian had already been pushed to the brink in the final, trailing 1-3 after two sets and then 3-5 after four. With her gold medal hopes hanging by a thread, Kumkum produced a perfect 30 in the fifth set to force the shoot-off.
Oh went first and managed only an eight.
Kumkum needed no second chance. She sent her arrow into the 10-ring to seal a victory that was as much about composure as accuracy, and immediately secured an Olympic quota place for India in the women’s individual recurve event at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The gold capped a remarkable campaign for the teenager, who had already been part of India’s historic women’s recurve team gold and won a silver in the mixed team event.
Kumkum’s route to the individual final had been equally impressive. She defeated South Korea’s reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinals before overcoming China’s Zhu Jingyi 6-2 in the semifinals.
But the final against Oh demanded something different — the ability to survive the pressure of a contest that repeatedly swung away from her.
At 5-5, there was no room for a tactical calculation or a second arrow. It was one shot each.
Oh blinked first.
Kumkum did not. The 10 completed a remarkable reversal for Indian recurve archery, which had endured years of South Korean dominance at the Asian Games. Kumkum's individual triumph came a day after the Indian women's team had ended that long wait for gold.
For Kumkum, however, the defining image of the Games will be that final arrow — a 10 that transformed a tied final into a historic gold medal.
