Landslides block highways in flood-ravaged Manipur; 1.7 lakh people affected by floods

Imphal, June 6 (UNI) Major landslides in about 170 places, including national highways, have cut off Manipur from the rest of the country, even as over 1.7 lakh people have been affected by floods in the state, while four persons have died and hundreds of displaced persons are living in 80 relief centres.
Authorities have made some diversions to enable people to travel on foot, with the highways being cut off.
Relief and repair works in Manipur and Nagaland have slowed down due to continuous heavy rainfall for almost eight days now.
About 708 villages have been affected and 36,000 houses were washed away by the floods.
Most hospitals, including the main state referral hospital the JNIMS, have been closed down and JNIMS authority said the hospitals will not be functional for almost a week now.
Power supply has been restored in some pockets. However, most areas faced power cuts, poor internet and mobile services due to non-functioning of mobile towers.
About 163 hectares of agricultural land were submerged. Water levels of major rivers have receded but the water which had overflowed to residential areas has yet to be drained out.
There was moderate rainfall on Friday which was a major relief to the people.
Over 4,200 people, mostly senior citizens, children, including patients at hospitals, have so far been evacuated by Assam Rifles, SDRF, NDRF, MMTA, Arambai Tengol, COCOMI, Fire Brigade, Red Cross and other volunteers .

Government has identified relief camps of Imphal East, Imphal West and Senapati districts where most of the relief centres are opened.
Health official said the department has deployed 16 Health Rapid Response Team (RRT) for Imphal East, Imphal West and Senapati districts.
The teams visited the relief camps and examined the people. Medicines and other medicinal items like ORS, antibiotic ointments and first aid items, etc. were also distributed. Awareness was given regarding water borne diseases like diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis A, etc. The response team consisted of doctor, nurse and other paramedical staff.
