Laser Angioplasty offers alternative to bypass heart surgery

Thiruvananthapuram, May 5 (UNI) In a remarkable breakthrough, a 60-year-old man from Alappuzha with critical heart blockages has been successfully treated using laser-assisted angioplasty offering a viable alternative to conventional bypass heart surgery.
This path-breaking technology is now available for the first time in south Kerala at SP Medifort Hospital here.
The patient, who initially sought treatment for severe chest pain, was diagnosed with multi-vessel coronary artery disease following an angiogram at a hospital in Kottayam.
With blockages detected in all three major arteries, doctors at multiple hospitals recommended immediate bypass surgery.
However, due to personal constraints, the patient was unable to proceed with open-heart surgery and began seeking less invasive options.
Despite being informed elsewhere that angioplasty had only a 50% success rate in his case, the patient was encouraged by the recent launch of advanced laser angioplasty services at SP Medifort.
After a thorough evaluation, the hospital’s cardiac team confirmed that the procedure could be safely attempted using cutting-edge laser technology and intravascular imaging (IVUS).
Dr Praveen G. L, Interventional Cardiologist, who led the high-precision procedure, said "Laser angioplasty is a game-changer in managing severe and complex blockages where traditional methods may fall short."
“This case highlights how emerging technologies can bring renewed hope to patients previously left with limited options.”
The minimally invasive procedure was completed without complications, and all three arteries were successfully opened. The patient has since made a full recovery and is now back to leading a healthy, normal life.
