LoP accuses Himachal' Sukhu government of politicising new districts ahead of elections

Shimla, Oct 15 (UNI) Leader of Opposition (LoP) and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday accused the Congress government of making election-oriented announcements to divert public attention from unfulfilled poll guarantees and administrative failures, questioning its intentions behind the proposed reorganisation of administrative units and creation of new districts.
Talking to mediapersons in Mandi, Thakur said the government should have undertaken the exercise of creating new districts at the beginning of its five-year tenure if it genuinely intended to improve administration and serve public interest.
Raising the issue close to the next Assembly elections, he alleged, reflected the government's political compulsions rather than a genuine commitment to administrative reform.
Thakur also questioned the timing of the proposed exercise, pointing out that the nationwide Census process was underway and administrative and revenue boundaries had been frozen.
Under these circumstances, the decision to initiate a commission for the reorganisation of administrative units was difficult to understand, he said, adding that the BJP would discuss the matter within the party before announcing its formal response.
Alleging that the Congress government had failed to fulfil the guarantees made during the last Assembly elections, the BJP leader said fresh announcements were being used to conceal its shortcomings.
He claimed that the recent panchayat and urban local body elections had exposed public dissatisfaction with the government's policies and that the proposed administrative changes were an attempt to regain lost political ground.
Referring to playback singer Sona Mohapatra's recent criticism of environmental management in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur said concerns over the state's condition were no longer confined to political opponents.
He cited her remarks directed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, urging him to focus on improving governance in the Congress-ruled state before speaking about fixing democracy.
Thakur alleged that inadequate waste management and heaps of garbage were damaging Himachal Pradesh's natural beauty and adversely affecting its tourism sector.
Tourists visiting the state were also noticing the lack of effective waste disposal arrangements, he claimed.
He said imposing taxes on people and businesses would not improve governance unless the revenue collected was spent transparently on development works and essential civic facilities.
The government needed to strengthen basic services and address environmental concerns instead of relying on announcements, he added.
The Leader of Opposition also accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of prioritising political manoeuvring and frequent visits to Delhi over development and public grievances.
Alleging misuse of the state government's helicopter, Thakur claimed that it was being used excessively for political visits and to facilitate the movement of Congress leaders and legal representatives.
He said the Congress had criticised the previous BJP government over helicopter expenditure but was now following a similar practice for political purposes.
Thakur maintained that the government's priorities should be development, efficient administration and public welfare rather than efforts to protect its political position.
He asserted that people would respond to what he described as unfulfilled promises and misplaced priorities in the coming elections.
