Maha: Fadnavis slams Opposition over Prashant Bhushan's 'regime change' remark

Mumbai, Oct 17 (UNI) In a sharp escalation of political confrontation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today mounted a direct attack on the opposition over ongoing demonstrations in the national capital, accusing them of attempting to destabilize democracy under the guise of protesting against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Fadnavis’ reaction came in response to senior advocate Prashant Bhushan’s public remarks at a press conference in Delhi, where he stated that demanding a "regime change" and asking for a change of government was a fundamental right within a democratic system.
Hitting back on social media platform X, Fadnavis claimed the opposition’s true intentions have been unmasked.
"They realize that winning through democratic means and valid voters is far from possible, which is why the truth has come out of their mouths. Their ploy to gain power by creating chaos across the country stands exposed," he said.
Questioning the opposition's stance, the Chief Minister added: "Why do they oppose SIR? Because they want a 'regime change'. Unable to come to power through elections, they speak the language of changing the regime. They want to overthrow the government, but not through democratic means. Opposing SIR is merely a pretext; their actual opposition is to democracy itself and to the legitimate votes of citizens."
Fadnavis stressed that citizens must choose between protecting democracy or siding with those calling for an unconstitutional shift in power, maintaining that "there is no alternative to SIR for democracy."
The multi-party agitation—spearheaded by Congress, opposition alliances, and youth organizations—has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the complete withdrawal of the SIR exercise.
During the agitation, Bhushan defended the demand for political transition, stating, "If the government feels this is a fight for power change, then yes, we want regime change. What is wrong with that? Demanding a change of government in a democracy is not a crime."
