Mizoram Congress, BJP trade charges over voter roll revision

Aizawl, Oct 22 (UNI) The Congress and the BJP in Mizoram traded accusations over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with the Congress alleging an attempt to delete more than 13 crore voters and the BJP defending the exercise as necessary to ensure free and fair elections.
The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) held its “Vote Humhim La, Ram Chhanhim Rawh” (Save Vote, Save the Nation) campaign in Serchhip, accusing the BJP and the RSS of undermining democracy and attempting to deprive citizens of their voting rights.
MPCC president Lal Thanzara alleged that the BJP had been using the Election Commission to remove over 13 crore voters from electoral rolls.
He said the Congress, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, would continue its agitation until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was removed from office.
Thanzara also accused the BJP of pursuing its ideological goal of turning India into a Hindu nation and alleged that the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government in Mizoram, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, was seeking closer ties with the BJP.

Dr A. Chella Kumar, AICC in-charge of Mizoram, described voting rights as the foundation of democracy and accused the BJP-led government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to take away rights enjoyed by citizens since Independence.
He alleged that the BJP had divided people over religion, food habits and clothing before targeting their voting rights.
“If the BJP can remove as many as 13 crore votes, it may also seek to take away the rights of you and me,” Chella Kumar said.
He also accused the BJP and RSS of persecuting Christians and criticised the ZPM government's alleged efforts to forge an alliance with the BJP.
The BJP hit back, describing the Congress campaign slogan as misleading and politically motivated.
In a statement, it accused the Congress of making unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud and said Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly used terms such as “fake votes” and “vote theft” without providing evidence to support his claims.
Defending the SIR, the BJP said the revision was intended to remove the names of deceased persons, ineligible registrants and people who had shifted elsewhere, ensuring that only eligible voters remained on the electoral rolls.
It said the Election Commission had conducted similar exercises eight times between 1951 and 2004.
The party accused the Congress of questioning the electoral process whenever results went against it while accepting the same process when it or its allies won.
It also cited recent ballot-paper elections in Assam and Tripura, claiming that victories by the BJP and its allies demonstrated the weakness of the Congress's allegations.
The BJP further questioned the Congress's democratic credentials, citing the Emergency imposed in 1975 under Indira Gandhi, during which it said more than one lakh people were jailed and 1,774 died. It also referred to restrictions on the press and the Allahabad High Court's 1975 ruling invalidating Gandhi's 1971 Lok Sabha election on grounds of electoral malpractice.
Defending the Modi government, the BJP said India had experienced 12 years of democratic governance from 2014 to 2026, with improvements in security, welfare delivery and economic growth. It also claimed that conflicts in the Northeast were gradually moving towards resolution.
The party accused the Congress of promoting dynastic politics at the national and state levels, including in Mizoram, and announced plans for a nationwide campaign under the slogan “Loktantra Bachao, Bheedtantra Hatao” (Save Democracy, Remove Family Rule).
The BJP urged the people of Mizoram not to be misled by what it called Congress misinformation, while the Congress called on voters to support the INDIA bloc in its fight against the BJP.
