Mizoram launches three-year plan to combat drug

Aizawl, Sep 28 (UNI) Mizoram launched a three-year action plan to combat drug trafficking and addiction on Monday, with the state’s first “drug-free village” being declared in Khawzawl district
as authorities stepped up efforts to tackle the growing problem.


Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) formally launched the State Action Plan to Combat Drug Menace 2026-2029 in Aizawl, while Home Minister K. Sapdanga declared Tlangmawi village the state’s first drug-free village.


The plan focuses on preventing drug abuse, particularly among young people, through enforcement, awareness campaigns, rehabilitation and greater community participation.
Singh called for coordinated efforts by government agencies, communities, NGOs and other stakeholders, saying Mizoram’s location along an international border placed a special responsibility on the state to curb drug trafficking.


“Quick profits through drug trafficking” must be rejected, Singh said, urging villages and towns to follow Tlangmawi’s example.


Sapdanga said Mizoram had become a “gateway of drugs” and called for stronger action against the entire drug trade, including those involved in trafficking beyond peddlers and carriers.
He said border operations would be intensified to check the inflow of narcotics.


According to the Home Minister, 635 cases were registered under the NDPS Act between January and August this year, with 930 people arrested, including 111 foreigners. Drugs worth more than Rs 846 crore were seized during the period.


While stressing strict enforcement, Sapdanga said people battling addiction should be treated with compassion and provided support to return to normal life.
He also called for stronger drug-awareness programmes in schools and colleges.

The Governor highlighted the role of community organisations in the campaign and referred to initiatives including Operation Jericho, a cross-border anti-drug operation, and the Hulhliap Short Stay Centre for detoxification and rehabilitation.


Tlangmawi village representatives, a recovered drug user and a police officer from Zokhawthar on the India-Myanmar border shared their experiences during the programme.
