Mumbai Crime Branch arrests 23-year-old man for stealing 2.66 tonnes of tomatoes

Mumbai, Oct 26 (UNI) The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stealing a tempo carrying 2.66 tonnes of tomatoes and selling the produce to local vendors at prices much lower than the prevailing market rates, police said.
The accused, identified as Ranjen Ramachandra Jaiswal, a resident of Sion Koliwada, was arrested from Antop Hill. Police said he had previously been arrested in a banana theft case.
According to Crime Branch Unit-IV, the tempo belonged to Nasim Dilaver Qureshi, 32, a vegetable wholesaler from Dharavi. The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a vegetable market in Santacruz in the early hours of the day.
The tempo was carrying 95 crates of tomatoes weighing around 2,660 kg. The consignment had been brought from Ahmednagar.
The theft came to light when patrolling police personnel noticed handcart vendors selling tomatoes near GTB Nagar railway station and in the Sion Koliwada market for Rs 25 per kg. The prevailing market price was between Rs 60 and Rs 80 per kg.
Suspecting that the tomatoes might have been stolen, the police questioned the vendors. During the inquiry, the vendors reportedly said that a man claiming to be a wholesaler had sold them the produce at a low price.
Acting on the information provided by the vendors, the Crime Branch traced and arrested Jaiswal. Police recovered around 1.98 tonnes of tomatoes from his possession. He was allegedly planning to sell the produce in Dadar and other markets.
A case under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which deals with theft, has been registered at Santacruz police station.
Police are investigating whether others were involved in the theft and the sale of the stolen tomatoes.
