Mumbai pays homage to co-pilot Clive Kunder

Mumbai, June 19 (UNI) The mortal remains of First Officer Clive Kunder, co-pilot of the ill-fated Air India flight AI-171, were returned to his family home in Mumbai on Thursday morning following last week's catastrophic crash in Ahmedabad.

Kunder's casket arrived via flight at Mumbai airport before being transported to his residence on Ram Mandir Road in Goregaon (West), where he lived with his elderly parents and younger sister.

The final rites will be conducted at Sewri Christian Cemetery.

The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed on June 12 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and crew, along with 29 people on the ground when the aircraft struck a medical complex outside the airport perimeter.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an aviator with 8,200 flying hours, assisted by Kunder who had logged 1,100 flight hours.

Investigators confirmed Captain Sabharwal issued a "Mayday" distress call – indicating a full emergency – to Ahmedabad Air Traffic Control moments after the aircraft departed at 1:39 pm.

Sabharwal's last rites were performed in his Powai residence on Tuesday.
