NEC showcases key development initiatives, launches smart agriculture project in Arunachal

Itanagar, June 16 (UNI) The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), has announced major strides in regional development with the release of the NEC Yearbook 2025 and the disbursement of over Rs 11 crore for critical projects in Arunachal Pradesh.
The NEC Yearbook 2025, now in its second edition, serves as a detailed compendium of socio-economic indicators, sectoral achievements, and transformative initiatives across the North Eastern Region (NER). Aimed at aiding policymakers, academicians, and researchers, the publication offers data-driven insights to guide future development strategies. The yearbook is available at necouncil.gov.in.
In May, NEC released Rs 11.37 crore to support a diverse range of development projects in Arunachal Pradesh. These funds span key sectors including tourism, industry, agriculture, transport and communication, science and technology, water resource management, human resource development, and cultural heritage. This financial boost underscores NEC’s continued commitment to timely implementation and regional growth.
A significant portion of the released funds includes the first instalment for a groundbreaking project titled "Technological Intervention using Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things for Smart Agriculture in North East India".
This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology (NERIST) in Arunachal Pradesh, marks a crucial step towards agricultural modernization. The project is set for completion by April 2028.
The smart agriculture initiative introduces a cutting-edge digital farm monitoring system that will enable farmers to oversee their fields 24x7 through a mobile application. By utilising AI and IoT technologies, the system provides real-time updates on soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and crop health.
These digital tools, accessible directly via smartphones, will empower farmers to respond immediately to potential threats, thereby optimizing decision-making, enhancing resource efficiency, and boosting agricultural productivity.
By significantly minimizing manual labour and improving precision agriculture, the project is expected to promote sustainable and inclusive farming practices, heralding a new era of technology-driven agriculture in the Northeast.
The NEC’s latest initiatives reaffirm its focus on holistic development and technological empowerment in Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast region. UNI TD SSP
