NEHU suspends Prof. Saha after CBI arrest in bribery case

Shillong, June 20 (UNI) Prof. Nirmalendu Saha, Dean of the School of Life Sciences of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya, has been suspended following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a bribery case, an official said on Friday.
Saha was caught red-handed by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 3.43 lakh from Pranjal Sharma, the proprietor of a Guwahati-based supply firm.
The duo was arrested during a CBI-led trap operation at the Gauhati University guest house on June 10.
“Prof. Saha is deemed suspended after being in CBI custody for 48 hours. Upon receiving official communication from the agency, the university issued the suspension letter,” NEHU Spokesperson, Dr. Davidson Pyngrope, said.
The suspension order, signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU Shillong Campus, Prof. Sumarbin Umdor, was issued after Prof. Saha completed 48 hours in CBI custody.
Saha allegedly received bribes in exchange for awarding supply orders of scientific equipment, laboratory items, and for the clearance of related bills.
