ADB, Japan back green ammonia plant in India with $100 million loan

Hyderabad, Oct 15 (UNI) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japan have signed financing agreements with AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited to support the development of one of the world's largest renewable energy-powered green ammonia plants in India.
The project marks the first investment under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience (ACCEL), an initiative launched by ADB and Japan in May 2026 to strengthen energy security and support sustainable energy systems across Asia and the Pacific, the company said in a release on Thursday.
The plant will convert a former natural gas-based ammonia and urea facility to renewable-powered green ammonia production, with a planned capacity of about 1.1 million tonnes a year.
The project is expected to support the development of India's green ammonia export industry and reduce emissions from production of a key ingredient used in fertilisers and other industrial applications.
The financing includes a $100 million loan from the Leading Asia's Private Infrastructure Fund 2, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and administered by ADB.
ADB President Masato Kanda said the project would enable India to produce ammonia using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels, helping lower emissions while expanding production capacity.
He said the investment also demonstrated how ADB and Japan could support energy security through investments that create new markets and jobs.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said strengthening the resilience of Asia's energy supply chains was essential. Japan would continue working with ADB to diversify energy sources and strengthen economic resilience across the region, she said.
ACCEL supports countries and businesses in Asia and the Pacific in managing rising energy prices and developing more resilient energy systems.
Its two-pronged approach includes short-term corporate liquidity support, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, and medium- to long-term investments in diversified and sustainable energy systems.
Japan supports the initiative through trust funds financed by the country and administered by ADB, as well as collaboration with Japanese development finance institutions, including JICA and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
