The Indian rupee ended lower for the third consecutive session falling 25 paise at 95.19 per dollar versus Friday's close of 94.94.
More than 500 stocks touched a 52-week low, including Atul, Bank of India, UTI AMC, Tata Consumer Products, CreditAccess Grameen, RailTel, Cholamandalam Financial Holdings, Sammaan Capital, Afcons Infrastructure, Sumitomo Chemical India, Linde India, NSDL, L&T Finance, Container Corporation of India, United Breweries, NCC, Voltas, Inox Wind, Aptus Value Housing Finance and Canara Bank., among others.
In terms of some of the individual performers, Ather Energy surged 13.7 percent, Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 2 percent, DCB Bank declined 3 percent, while Apollo Micro Systems jumped 10 percent.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, "Indian equities recovered from early losses, supported by value buying and strength in metals, power and healthcare. However, elevated crude prices, geopolitical uncertainty and caution ahead of the Fed, ECB and BoJ policy decisions kept sentiment measured.
"Mid- and small-caps also witnessed some recovery after last week’s sharp correction, although investors remained selective, favouring earnings visibility and valuation comfort. Early-bird quarterly results suggest a commodity-led earnings boost in power generation, metals and refining, but high energy costs and interest rates are forecast to moderate overall corporates growth in the coming quarters."
