NTPC terminates ₹413-cr Mouda BESS contract over contractor default

New Delhi, Sep 20 (UNI) NTPC Limited has terminated the contract awarded to GR Infraprojects Limited (GRIL) for setting up a 400-MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra, citing the contractor's failure to meet contractual obligations and achieve the required project progress.
The contract, valued at ₹413.37 crore, was awarded in March 2026, with the project scheduled for completion within 15 months in line with national energy objectives.
However, the project faced significant delays in critical activities. NTPC had issued a contractual notice to GRIL seeking immediate corrective action, but the contractor failed to undertake the required remedial measures, the company said.
Consequently, NTPC terminated the contract with immediate effect. In accordance with the contractual provisions, the company has also encashed available securities amounting to approximately ₹91 crore.
NTPC said the Mouda BESS project remains an important initiative aimed at strengthening grid flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable energy.
The company has initiated the process of re-tendering the project at the risk and cost of GRIL, as provided under the applicable contractual provisions. NTPC said it is taking measures on priority to facilitate the early re-award and timely implementation of the project.
The Mouda BESS project is part of NTPC's broader strategy to deploy battery energy storage alongside its conventional power generation assets. The company is pursuing BESS projects at multiple locations as energy storage assumes a greater role in balancing India's increasingly renewable-intensive power system.UNI AAB
