SBI identifies 3,897 customer records with personal information in suspected dark web exposure

New Delhi, Oct 21 (UNI) The State Bank of India (SBI) has identified 3,897 customer records containing personally identifiable information (PII) in data suspected to have surfaced on the dark web. The country's largest lender has initiated a detailed investigation to verify the authenticity of the records and determine the source and extent of the alleged exposure.
In an exchange filing on Wednesday, SBI said it received alerts about the suspected incident on October 16 from its threat intelligence service provider, the Defence Cyber Agency and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). A preliminary examination of approximately 3.75 lakh records found on the dark web flagged 3,897 records containing customer information.
According to the bank, the information identified in the records reportedly included customers' names, registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, gender, email addresses and residential addresses. The data also contained branch details, Customer Information File (CIF) identifiers, lead IDs, metadata linked to loan and lead records, and other related files.
SBI said it had activated its cyber incident response and containment protocols following the alerts. The lender has also engaged an independent cybersecurity agency empanelled by CERT-In to investigate the suspected exposure and evaluate the potential risks to customers and the bank.
The investigation will focus on establishing whether the identified information is authentic and complete, tracing the possible source of the exposure, and determining the extent of the incident. The bank said it was implementing appropriate remedial and preventive measures based on the findings.
SBI clarified that the suspected data exposure had not materially affected its core business operations or financial performance. It added that business continuity remained unaffected and its core functions were operating normally.
The development comes amid growing concerns over cybersecurity risks and the potential misuse of personal information exposed through data breaches. The investigation is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the suspected exposure and the measures required to address any risks to affected customers.UNI VK AAB
