Hyd: PI Industries launches India's first indigenously developed insecticide, targets global markets

Hyderabad, Oct 31 (UNI) PI Industries Ltd on Saturday launched ‘Pioxazon’, an indigenously discovered and patented insecticide molecule, developed for controlling major pests in rice, maize and Bengal gram, marking a milestone in India's crop-protection research.
The product, Pioxaniliprole 20 per cent SC, is the first insecticide molecule discovered and developed indigenously in India to complete the process of registration and commercialisation, the company said.
Speaking at the launch, PI Industries Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director Mayank Singhal said the company had invested around Rs 2,000 crore in research and development to develop the product.
The company plans to introduce four stock-keeping units (SKUs) in different pack sizes and is yet to finalise the pricing. The product would be introduced into the market on November 6. The initial focus would be on farmer outreach, field demonstrations and establishing its benefits rather than large-scale sales during the first season, he said.
Registered by the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIB&RC), Pioxazon is intended to control Yellow Stem Borer in rice, Fall Armyworm in maize and Pod Borer in Bengal gram. It has undergone multilocation field trials under different growing conditions.
Singhal said the product would be manufactured at the company's existing facilities, which had sufficient capacity to meet domestic and international demand. PI Industries has six manufacturing sites.
The company is initially targeting three overseas markets and is undertaking product evaluations in those countries. The potential market across the targeted pest-control segments in rice, maize and Bengal gram was worth several thousand crore rupees, he said.
Describing the launch as a significant step towards reducing India's dependence on crop-protection technologies developed overseas, Singhal said the company had several other products in its research pipeline and expected to introduce two more products over the next five years.
Developing a new crop-protection molecule generally takes five to ten years, he added.
Saket Bhatnagar, CEO – India Brands, PI AgSciences, said Pioxazon offered rapid absorption within 30 minutes of application, rainfastness and prolonged pest control. Its translaminar action enables the product to move through plant tissues, while its formulation is designed to be safer for beneficial insects, including predatory spiders, beetles, ladybird beetles, damselflies and green lacewings.
The company would reach farmers in rice, maize and Bengal gram-growing regions through its distributor and retailer network, supported by field demonstrations and training programmes, Bhatnagar said.
Singhal said Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together contributed around 20–25 per cent of the company's revenue, highlighting the importance of the two States to its domestic business.
