Venkateswara College students lead green research initiative on Bhalswa Lake

New Delhi, May 23 (UNI) In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and academic engagement, students from the Life Sciences Department of Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, have undertaken a collaborative research initiative to study environmental pollution, focusing on the severely degraded Bhalswa Lake in Delhi.
The project, conducted in association with the University School of Environment Management, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, was mentored by Dr. Shweta Sharma from the Department of Botany. The research explored pollution across air, water, soil, and biological domains.
The study revealed alarming degradation of Bhalswa Lake, once a vibrant freshwater ecosystem, caused by industrial waste, cremation ash, landfill leachate, and urban sewage.
Mihir Ujjwal's research, guided by Dr. Sharma and Prof. Kiranmay Sarma, involved analysis of 12 crucial physico-chemical parameters and used advanced tools like GIS mapping, Water Quality Index (WQI), and Comprehensive Pollution Index (CPI) analysis.
The results were concerning, with a WQI of 360.33 (unsafe for human or aquatic use) and CPI of 2.35 (indicating critical pollution levels). The lake's southern and central zones were found to be the most polluted, with primary sources of contamination including Bhalswa landfill leachate, industrial effluents, urban wastewater, and agricultural runoff.
To counter this, Dr. Sharma recommended phytoremediation using native plant species like Neem, Tulsi, Jamun, and resilient weeds like Vetiver, Distichlis grass, Suaeda, and Sporobolus, integrated with nano-fertilizers and organic compost from kitchen waste.
Dr. Sharma thanked Principal Prof. Vajala Ravi and Dean Prof. Varun Joshi for their support in encouraging student-led environmental research. This initiative showcases the power of youth-led science and sustainability, demonstrating how academic research can serve as a catalyst for environmental transformation.
