GST e-way bill data aids economic forecasting beyond tax compliance

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (UNI) GST e-way bill data, primarily used to track the movement of goods, is also serving as a high-frequency input for economic forecasting and nowcasting by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and statistical authorities, highlighting the expanding role of tax administration data in assessing economic activity.
K Balasubramanian, Joint Secretary in the Department of Revenue, said the data supported logistics-related decision-making and had wider economic applications, explaining why the government was examining the e-way bill mechanism as part of the broader GST reform process.
Addressing an interactive session on “The GST Reset—What the 57th Council Means for Business”, organised by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) here on Monday, he said an officers' working group involving states had examined various aspects of the e-way bill system, including concerns over its implementation.
The wider economic utility of the data was an important consideration in assessing proposals to remove or modify the mechanism, as it provides information on the movement of goods across the economy.
However, the government has acknowledged industry concerns over the indiscriminate interception of goods vehicles, which can disrupt transportation and increase compliance-related difficulties for businesses.
Balasubramanian said the recommended reforms sought to address such concerns by requiring specific intelligence and authorisation by an officer not below the rank of Joint Commissioner for interception, besides placing restrictions on interception in transit states.
Earlier, BCIC President CA K Ravi said navigating tax reforms and bridging the gap between industry and government remained a key priority for the chamber. He emphasised the need for simplified compliance, policy clarity and seamless trade through constructive dialogue with the government.
K Ravi also said BCIC, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, was strengthening its international presence, with plans to establish an office in Singapore, while advancing collaborations in artificial intelligence research, industry engagement and social initiatives.
The session, organised under the aegis of BCIC's Indirect Taxes Expert Committee, brought together government representatives, tax experts and industry executives to discuss the implications of the 57th GST Council's recommendations for businesses and tax practice.
