Kakinada: Industrial growth should be coupled with zero pollution, strict CRZ safeguards: Environmental groups

Kakinada, Oct 7 (UNI) Environmental organisations and independent activists at a round-table meeting here on Wednesday demanded that industrial growth in the region be accompanied by zero-pollution norms and strict enforcement of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) safeguards.
The meeting, chaired by social activist Rambala Satish, welcomed sustainable industrial expansion and economic growth but stressed that development should not come at the cost of the region's biodiversity.
The participants expressed concern over increasing air, water and land pollution and called for all future industrial development to adhere strictly to sustainable and environment-friendly standards.
The meeting also sought transparency in the government's 100-day coastal pollution action plan and clarity on industrial waste management practices.
The participants strongly opposed the proposed transfer of 1,245 acres of Salt Commission lands to the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board for industrial expansion, stating that the intertidal salt lands bordered the Coringa mangroves and served as important habitats for migratory birds and marine breeding grounds.
The meeting assumed significance in the backdrop of the CII conference scheduled to be held in Kakinada on October 12.
Following the meeting, environmental NGOs and independent social activists formed an Environmental Protection United Platform and constituted a steering committee.
Rambala Satish was appointed organising secretary, Dindi Ramesh convenor, Kommana Satish liaison committee convenor, Dr Vamsikrishna scientific adviser and KVVSN Murthy legal adviser. Kalidas, Shyam and Tadi Prasad were appointed co-convenors.
