Stock Markets end lower for 2nd session, Nifty below 22,200

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) Indian Stock Markets ended lower for the second consecutive session today, with Nifty falling below 22,200 in intraday to hit a fresh 52-week low amid broad-based selling, led by IT stocks, and weak rupee also impacted the market sentiment.
At close, the BSE Sensex slumped by 1,045.46 points, or 1.44 per cent, to 71,593.24, and the NSE Nifty dropped by 371.25 points, or 1.64 pc, to 22,231.80. Both Nifty midcap and smallcap indices fell by more than 2 pc each.
Biggest Nifty losers were Adani Enterprises, JSW Steel, Max Healthcare, ITC and Interglobe Aviation, while gainers included Infosys, Axis Bank and Tech Mahindra.
Among the sectors, all the indices ended in the red. Auto, Energy, FMCG, Infra, Media, Metal, Oil & Gas, Pharma, Realty were down in the range of 2-3 pc.
Indian rupee ended marginally lower for the third consecutive session at 96.78 per US dollar, compared with the previous close of 96.77.
Over 300 stocks touched 52-week low. These included Inox Wind, NCC, Intellect Design Arena, Suzlon Energy, Max Healthcare, SJVN, Vedanta Aluminium, PI Industries, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers, Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation, Swan Corp, Godfrey Phillips India, Aditya Birla Real Estate, Godawari Power & Ispat, Rail Vikas Nigam, Bharat Dynamics, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals, Indian Oil Corporation and Muthoot Finance., among others.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited said, "The domestic market continued on its sharp sell-off mode as the ripple effects of hawkish RBI policy weighed on rate-sensitive sectors, effectively resetting near-term valuation multiples.
"This headwind was further amplified by persistent FII outflows, harder bond yields, and a depreciating INR. Moreover, volatile crude oil prices hovering stubbornly above the USD $100 mark continue to be a hurdle for the national economy.
"The favourable high-frequency data underscores a resilient domestic economy while the likelihood of additional rate hikes keeps equity valuations compressed.
"Mid- and small-cap counters lagged amid margin concerns and tactical profit booking. Looking ahead, the market focus shifts to the Q2 earnings season, where management commentary on demand sustainability and input cost absorption will provide critical near-term direction," he added.
