Arunachal Dy CM holds 2nd round of talks with SIFF on SUMP

Itanagar, June 15 (UNI) In a continued effort to build consensus on the contentious Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Minister in-charge of Power, Chowna Mein, held a crucial meeting with members of the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum
(SIFF) at the Civil Secretariat here.
This marks his second interaction with the Forum regarding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), which has been accorded National Project status by the Government of India in 2008.
During the meeting on Saturday, Mein reiterated the State Government’s commitment to participatory development and assured the Forum members that their grievances and concerns are being heard and duly considered.
“We have been engaged in constant dialogue with SIFF and other organisations at various levels. Ours is a welfare government that believes in taking along the people on the path of development,” said the Deputy Chief Minister.
He apprised the Forum members about the strategic importance of the SUMP, while also acknowledging the need for transparency, fair compensation, and sustainable rehabilitation
of all likely project-affected families.
The meeting was attended by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Ojing Tasing,
Advisor to Hydropower Minister, Ninong Ering, and senior state government officials.
The meeting is part of the State’s ongoing efforts to promote dialogue-driven consensus-building around key infrastructure initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh.
The proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (11,000 MW), touted to be India’s largest hydel project, faced with initial hiccups with some sections of the indigenous Adi community people from Siang valley strongly objecting to the preparation of the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) for the SUMP.
