Eight Bengal police officers receive Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak

Kolkata, Oct 31 (UNI) Eight police officers from West Bengal have been awarded the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak for 2026, announced by the union Home Ministry to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India.
The recognition comes after the West Bengal government submitted nominations for the awards, marking a departure from the earlier period when strained relations between the state and the Centre reportedly kept the state from sending names for consideration.
The improved coordination between the two governments has now resulted in eight officers from Bengal making it to the national list.
According to the list released by the union Home Ministry on Friday, the recipients from West Bengal are Sub-Inspectors Manaschandra Dutta, Jayanta Kumar Chakraborty, Tenzing Bhutia, Shankar De, Chanku Bhutia, Kaushik Basak and Samir Ghosh, along with Inspector Ramgopal Pal.
Chakraborty is currently posted as the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Operations Group of Purulia district police, while Dutta is serving as a Sub-Inspector at Bandwan police station.
The medal recognises excellence in operations, outstanding performance in investigations, exceptional professional service, daring intelligence operations and meritorious contributions in forensic science.
It aims to acknowledge exemplary work, promote high professional standards and boost the morale of police and security personnel.
A total of 490 personnel from various states, union Territories, Central Armed Police Forces and Central Police Organisations have received the award this year across five categories.
Of these, 358 personnel were recognised for excellence in special operations, including counter-terrorism and anti-Naxal operations, while 123 officers received the medal for outstanding work in complex investigations.
The recipients also include 114 personnel from the CRPF, 56 from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs and 14 officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation. Officers from Punjab, Delhi and Jharkhand police have also figured in the list.
Instituted by the union Home Ministry through a notification on February 1, 2024, the Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak was first awarded in 2024.
The medals are announced every year on October 31, coinciding with Patel's birth anniversary, in recognition of exceptional professional contributions by police and security personnel across the country.
