Tejaswi attacks BJP over action against religious sites, says ‘bulldozer is no substitute for law’

Patna, Sept 28 (UNI) Stepping up the attack on the BJP over continuing bulldozer demolitions and other administrative action against mosques, madrasas and mazars across the country, RJD working president and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejaswi Yadav on Monday said that disputes involving religious sites must be settled through the Constitution, law and courts, and not through "bulldozers".
Yadav questioned the way authorities were handling alleged encroachments and illegal constructions involving religious structures and said the law must be applied uniformly to all places of worship. "The Constitution, law and courts should decide such disputes, not bulldozers," Yadav made it clear.
Referring to the reported demolition of a mosque at the Saharanpur Collectorate complex in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav said the episode raised questions about the procedure followed by the authorities. He acknowledged that the administration had maintained that the structure stood on government land and that the action followed a court process, but said the mosque management had raised objections regarding the procedure.
Yadav also cited reports of action involving mosques and madrasas in Sambhal and Ghaziabad, a madrasa in Muzaffarnagar, part of the Shahi Mosque in Ujjain, mazars in Uttarakhand and Gujarat, a mosque in Assam and religious structures in Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Telangana.
The RJD leader said a mosque, temple, church, gurudwara, mazar or madrasa should be subject to the same legal standards. "An allegation of encroachment or illegal construction cannot put the State above the Constitution and the law," he said, arguing that affected parties should be given notice, an opportunity to be heard and access to judicial remedies before coercive action is taken.
Yadav invoked Articles 14, 21 and 25 of the Constitution, saying equality before law, protection of life and personal liberty, and freedom of religion required the State to act based on law rather than religious identity.
He alleged that action against religious sites in the name of encroachment could create fear and insecurity among affected communities and called for transparent procedures and uniform legal standards.
Yadav reiterated that his party would continue to raise such issues and appealed to the judiciary and human rights institutions to ensure due process and protection of citizens' rights in cases involving religious sites.
