Coast Guard rescues distressed tanker carrying 9,000 tonnes palm oil

Bhubaneswar, Sep 28 (UNI) The Indian Coast Guard rescued a Belize-flagged tanker carrying 9,000 tonnes of palm oil after engine failure and flooding left it at risk of capsizing off the Odisha coast, officials said on Monday.
The MT Seagull 9, carrying 23 crew members, sent a distress call around 7.30 am on September 27 after its main engine failed and ballast tanks flooded, causing the vessel to tilt dangerously about 37 nautical miles east-southeast of Paradip.
The ICGS Vishwast was rushed to the site, where a specialised damage-control team boarded the unstable vessel and used de-flooding pumps and other equipment to stop the ingress of seawater. The team sealed two damaged seawater pipelines and contained a third fractured line.
The Coast Guard team and the tanker crew simultaneously carried out de-flooding and cargo-transfer operations, bringing the vessel under control.
A Pollution Control Vessel and an Offshore Patrol Vessel were also deployed for pollution response and surveillance, while an ICG Dornier aircraft from Bhubaneswar conducted aerial monitoring.
A minor palm-oil sheen spotted near the vessel on September 27 had dissipated by September 28, officials said.
After the vessel was stabilised, Paradip Port Authority tug Dolphin towed it towards the anchorage off Paradip. Repairs to its main engine are underway with assistance from the Coast Guard technical team.
The ICGS Vishwast and other Coast Guard assets remain deployed in the area as a precaution.UNI MK AAB
