WB: Man arrested for sexually assaulting 3-yr-old girl in North 24 Parganas

Kolkata, Oct 31 (UNI) A few days after a teen was allegedly raped and murdered in North 24 Parganas, another case of sexual assault on a minor has been reported from the district, with a man in his 40s arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in Duttapukur.
The accused- a 40-year-old man- was arrested after a written complaint was lodged by the victim's family.
Police have registered a case against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
He will be produced before the Barasat court on Saturday.
According to local sources, the accused had come to visit a relative in the area and allegedly took the child to the terrace of a neighbouring house in Subhashnagar, under the jurisdiction of Nilganj police outpost in Duttapukur police station area, where he sexually assaulted her.
The child's family has been living in a rented house in the locality for the past few months.
The incident allegedly took place before Thursday, after which the child's mother took the child to her parental home.
The matter came to light on Friday after other family members learnt about the alleged assault.
The mother and the child were subsequently brought back to Subhashnagar on Friday afternoon.
Family members alleged that when they approached the Nilganj police outpost to lodge a complaint, the police initially refused to accept it.
However, a written complaint was eventually registered, following which the accused was detained.
After preliminary questioning, he was arrested.
Police sources claimed that the accused had confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The child was taken to Barasat Medical College and Hospital for a medical examination.
However, her family and local residents alleged that they had to wait for nearly five hours as only a woman doctor was available at the hospital at the time and she was occupied with a surgery.
The delay triggered protests by local residents, who expressed anger over the lack of adequate medical staff to attend to the child.
The situation was brought under control after some time.
The family has demanded stringent punishment for the accused.
The incident comes days after a teenage girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Gaighata, also in North 24 Parganas.
The accused in that case was killed in a police encounter during a crime reconstruction exercise.
Police had claimed that he snatched a service weapon from an officer, opened fire and attempted to flee, prompting retaliatory firing in which he was killed.
