Rampant corruption affecting quality of bridges in Bihar: Congress

Patna, June 23 (UNI) Congress on Monday alleged that the quality of bridges in Bihar was badly affected due to rampant corruption and a large number bridges had collapsed last year, "failing to sustain the burden of corruption in the state".
Leader of Congress legislature party in Bihar Assembly Shakeel Ahmad Khan told media persons here that the quality of bridges was severely compromised due to rampant corruption in Bihar. A large number bridges had collapsed last year which was the result of nexus between officials and contractors engaged in looting public funds, he added.
"The much-awaited Kachi Dargah-Bidupur six-lane bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today but it was also affected by corruption, apparently compromising its quality," the Congress leader said, adding that the Grand Alliance government had sanctioned for construction of the bridge in 2015 but its estimate was increased by 60 percent. The initial cost was calculated at Rs 3,115 crores which increased to Rs 4,998 crores, he added.
Khan said that a total of 27 bridges had collapsed in the last three years. The Grand Alliance government had sanctioned a number of bridges when it was in power but its cost was increased during the regime of the NDA government, a clear indication of rampant corruption.
Several reports by technical committees exposed the fact that the use of poor quality materials, nexus between officials and contractors besides poor monitoring led to collapse of bridges in Bihar, he pointed out.
