Mentally unstable man beaten to death for attacking man in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 22 (UNI) A 32-year-old mentally challenged man was beaten to death after he allegedly attacked another man with a machete at Morasuti village in Meghalaya’s West Garo
Hills district on Saturday, police said on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Aminul Islam, while the injured identified as Fulbahar Sheikh.

A police official said the probe is on to determine the cause of the incident, even as Sheikh is now admitted to a Guwahati-based hospital in Assam to nurse his wounds.

According to a police officer, the incident occurred at Morasuti road on Saturday evening when Islam attacked Sheikh with a machete, before an irate mob chased and assaulted the attacker to his death.

“The deceased sustained deep lacerated wounds on his head and other parts of the body and died on the spot at New Bhaitbari near Durga Mandir under Rajabala Police Station,” Abraham Sangma, the district police chief of West Garo Hills, said.

Sangma said that the deceased attacker was also reported to be mentally challenged.

“We are registering a case but arrest has not been done yet as there are more than 30 to 40 people may be involved and yet to be identified by witnesses,” police said.
